The Marin County United Veterans Council (MCUVC) will host the morning ceremony starting at 9 a.m. in front of the military memorials on Avenue of the Flags, just outside the Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium. MCUVC President Glenn Ross will serve as host, and local dignitaries and elected officials will be acknowledged. Several individuals and groups will lay decorative wreaths at the base of the statues. The event will conclude with the playing of “Taps” during the 11th hour of the 11th day of November, when World War I officially ended in 1918.
There will be no indoor ceremony inside Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, MCUVC events have been held outdoors only as a public health precaution. The majority of those attending traditional Veterans Day ceremonies have been older adults, and that age group is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of COVID-19 and its variances.
Starting at 4 p.m., a buffet barbecue is taking place at the Exhibit hall behind the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Funded by an anonymous donor, the food and drinks will be free to veterans, active duty military personnel, and their families. Nonveterans may attend for a fee of $12. There will be a no-host bar and music will be provided by Petty Theft, the Bay Area’s tribute to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
An RSVP to the barbecue is required via admin@veteransday2018.org.
